3 areas of concern/SMART goals:

2. 4th grade Reading: Currently, 35% of the students in 4th grade are proficient in reading. By the end of the year, 70% of the students will demonstrate proficiency on grade level benchmarks.

3. 4th grade Math: Currently, 29% of the students in 4th grade are proficient in math. By the end of the year, 60% of the students will demonstrate proficiency on grade level benchmarks.

OK, maybe I looked at the wrong information. I didn't see anyhting broken up into grades. I will look at it again.

ones which i haven't seen mentioned yet:

1. from TWC results, teachers do not receive more than (on average) 3 hours per week for planning (significantly lower than the state average). in turn, they are spending upwards of ten hours per week outside of school with their work. more importantly, only a small portion of this time looks to be used for collaboration.
GOAL: implement and document PLC strategies with collaborative time set aside during common planning periods.

2. from the school report card: Cook experienced 23 incidents of suspension, over twice as many as the district's average of 9.
GOAL: implement a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) system to reduce time and effort spent addressing disciplinary concerns and foster a more positive learnign environment.

3. teacher recruitment - from teacher turnover to the number of national board-certified teachers and staff with the most years experience, Cook falls below the district average. I realize that not all staff members might want to play a role in hiring procedures, but no teachers reported a larger or major role in the hiring process.

GOAL: promote departmental unity and collaboration by opening up the hiring process to the teaching staff. additionally, promote good teaching practices and working conditions to help recruit and retain good teachers.

Cook Elementary: I have included some of the flags that I had seen using the NC Report Card, TWC, and Cook website. I noticed that the TWC had problems with decision making and lack of by teachers. The website is basic and needs more care, and on the report card, the school itself was low performing with a hole in the 4th grade.

1. I noticed on the report card that the 4th grade has a dip in scores for both reading and math:
Grade 3
Reading: 51.7%
Math: 31.0%
Grade 4
Reading: 35.3%
Math: 29.4%
Grade 5
Reading: 78.6%
Math: 53.6%

Goal 1: Align curriculum vertically and horizontally with all grades using PLCs to increase proficiency in all grades by 2009.

2. As a low performing school, there are approximately 200 students at the school and less than 50% are at grade level.

Goal 2: Increase teacher involvement with advanced degrees since only one quarter of the staff of 24 teachers have advanced degrees.

3. About 17% of the teachers are new and the teacher turnover rate, coincidentally is 17%

Goal 3:Teachers need to collaborate together and have more say in recruitment

4. On the school website, there is no vision statement or belief ideas. There is a small basic mission statement

Goal 4: Collaborate with the teachers on a new vision, beliefs and mission statement for the school by 2009.

1.3rd grade reading and math scores are both significantly below state averages.
Goal: Increase 3rd grade scores by 10%.

2.4th grade reading and math scores are both significantly below state averages.
Goal: Increase 4th grade scores by 10%.

3. TWC Survey:
a. Teachers have no role in hiring new teachers.
b. Less than 3 hours of collaborative time and the same for individual planning.
Goal: Create more time in the schedule for both collaboration and planning.

We can certainly work on just how high we would like the scores to rise but I do believe those are certainly things we need to address whether together or as separate goals.

So it looks like 4th grade reading and math scores are one area of concern. What should our second area be?

Can we look at collaboration time and teacher recruitment as one goal? We can use the idea of collaboration as a way to sell teachers on a decreased work load because of the time spent mutually planning as a team?

Just a thought.

Sounds like we might want to focus on the 4th grade reading/math and then use the PLC/Collaboration issue as our 2nd one. Are we going to go for a third?

Next, we need to creatively combine all of this information as our high-level, long-term (i.e., two to three years) goals for the school and add the detailed description of the action steps the school should take in order to reach the recommended long-term goals.

Does that sound right?

Sounds good to me Sarita! Do you think we need a third since these are involved with more than 1 issue in each?

I'm fine with either. See you all on Monday!

I hope you all enjoyed your break. I think we should include a 3rd goal to be on the safe side. I will also bring my ideas for the "high-level, long-term" goals tomorrow. See you all then.
